My kids celebrated in grand style all through the holidays. There were several outings to experience all the festivities that the season had to offer, from ice skating to dazzling twinkle lights and astonishing window displays downtown. They were schooled in the ways of power shopping, sled hill etiquette and the finer technical skills required to record Santa’s anticipated late-night delivery. They fought impending vision loss from viewing almost every classic holiday movie cable TV had to offer. Most of all, though, they created memories as siblings they will be able to share long after they leave my dysfunctional nest.
…Meet holiday distress
All that sharing led to the most disenchanting and least savory moment of all, though – the infamous bug of death! The raw, sore throat followed closely behind the record-breaking fever, ending with stomach pains that smother one’s appetite for days on end. It is the gift that keeps on giving from one sibling to the next until the entire family is in sheer holiday purgatory! So by the time I couldn’t survive the thought of another tent city in my living room, I had mastered the smoothie that nursed them back to health. The trick to this one is the coconut oil. It helps to coat the throat and eases the irritation that most of us experience in the height of cold and flu season.
This smoothie serves one. Blend and serve to the pickiest of patients!
